Acne is one of the most common skin conditions worldwide. About 80 percent of people from the ages of 11 to 30 (and often beyond) will experience some degree of acne in their lifetimes. Sometimes, it’s a few blackheads or a pimple or two. But for some, deep, painful acne cysts develop that can lead to lingering scars and self-esteem problems.
Ask your dermatologist about an acne treatment and skincare routine that can reduce breakouts, prevent scaring, and help you feel better. Your Anderson and Easley dermatologist can answer all these questions and more:
What Is Acne?
When your skin overproduces sebum (oils), it can clog pores with dead skin cells and bacteria, causing swelling, redness, and pus to collect inside the pore. Acne commonly appears on the face, chest, neck, shoulders, and back.
Who Suffers Acne?
Anyone can have an acne breakout, but it’s most common during adolescence. Hormonal changes seem to trigger acne. If you are feeling alone with acne, don’t: between 40 to 50 million other Americans suffer acne along with you.
What Causes Acne Outbreaks?
Our Anderson and Easley dermatologists know a lot about acne and successful acne treatments, but scientists around the world are still trying to figure out its underlying causes. The following things, however, are known to aggravate outbreaks:
- Hormones
- Genetics
- Greasy makeup
- Certain medications
- Pressure and friction from tight clothing, backpack straps, bike or football helmets, etc.
- Aggressive scrubbing and popping pimples
- Stress
- High humidity
- Pollution
